This season, Christian Brothers Academy Hockey had a rare occurrence as two players recorded 100 points within a week of each other.
Senior Dominic Szczygiel and junior Nicholas Desiderio surpassed 100 points each in their high school careers. Szczygiel notched his 100th point on January 15 and Desiderio followed that up with his own 100th point on January 22.
Even more impressively, both Colts accomplished the feat in just three seasons on the team.
“Obviously, it is an amazing achievement to get 100 points, especially as a junior,” Desiderio said. “I couldn’t do it without my teammates.”
Desiderio is leading the Colts with 28 goals on the season and has added 25 assists, which is good for third on the team. His 53 points surpassed his impressive junior season mark of 45 points, when he had 20 goals and 25 assists. He was a solid contributor as a freshman too, recording nine points.
After transferring into CBA, Szczygiel’s first year on varsity was as a sophomore, when he immediately made an impact with seven goals and seven assists. He had a breakout junior season when scored 48 points off of 16 goals and 32 assists. In his senior campaign, Szczygiel leads the team in both assists (36) and total points (61). Szczygiel also has 25 goals so far this season, which is second only to Desiderio.
“Hitting 100 points is obviously a fantastic personal accomplishment, but personally I’m looking past that and trying to win a state championship with the boys,” Szczygiel said.
With the regular season ending after a 17-5 record, the team is excited for the postseason run.
“After just getting done with the regular season, we need the team to all buy-in if we’re going to make a run in the postseason,” Desiderio said. “We are going to focus as a team and lock in during practices, so we can take our skills and put them into action during postseason games.”
CBA posted a 4-3 overtime win in the quarterfinals of the Gordon Cup Playoffs on February 5. Sczygiel was the hero, netting the game winner just a few minutes into the overtime period. It was his second goal of the contest after scoring CBA’s crucial third goal in the third period. Desiderio recorded a goal in the third period as well.
The Colts will play at Don Bosco in the Gordon quarterfinals on February 10.
