For the 11th time in the 16-year history of the award, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced that Christian Brothers Academy has won the 2019 ShopRite Cup for best non-public athletics program.
It is the fifth consecutive year that the Colts have topped the standings, marking the longest consecutive streak in the history of the non-public division. CBA had previously won the Cup three times in a row on two different occasions (2004-2006, 2011-2013).
"With great humility, we proudly accept the NJSIAA/ShopRite Cup again this year, highlighting what has been an already memorable athletic year," Director of Athletics Vito Chiaravalloti said. "Winning the ShopRite Cup is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our talented student-athletes, as well as the exceptional coaches who lead them. We take pride in continuing a consistency of excellence across a broad array of sports."
The ShopRite Cup is determined through a points system designed by the NJSIAA, which rewards schools for high finishes in NJSIAA-sanctioned state tournaments. All sports at CBA are governed by the NJSIAA, except crew, rugby and sailing which have independent governing bodies.
Cross Country, Soccer, Indoor Track Relays, Indoor Track Overall, Swimming, Golf and Outdoor Track were all state champions in their respective sports, while Tennis finished third in their state tournament. Each of those sports contributed to the ShopRite Cup point total.
In addition, CBA earned sportsmanship bonus points for having zero player or coach ejections across as a school across all three seasons.
Non-Public School Standings:
1) Christian Brothers Academy (179)
2) Delbarton School (128)
3) Immaculate Heart Academy (121)
4) St. Augustine Prep (101)
5) St. Peter's Prep (95)
Christian Brothers previously won the ShopRite Cup in 2004 (inaugural year), 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Outside of state competition, CBA were Monmouth County champions in cross country, indoor track, swimming, baseball, golf, and outdoor track. The Colts were Shore Conference champions in cross country, indoor track, swimming, golf, and outdoor track.
Christian Brothers was division champions in sports such as basketball, bowling, lacrosse and golf.
The NJSIAA and ShopRite Corporation will publicly present CBA with the ShopRite Cup in September on a date to be determined.
