Christian Brothers Academy Athletics is pleased to announce that Tom Gana '18 (Varsity Fencing) and Rob Mahala '18 (Varsity Basketball) have been named the January Student-Athletes of the Month, sponsored by Tinton Falls Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy.
TOM GANA | SENIOR | VARSITY FENCING | COLTS NECK, N.J.
THE RUNDOWN: It was an incredible month of action for Gana, one that saw him help lead the Colts to a major tournament victory. Fencing as the Epee A player, he went a perfect 7-0 in the final round at the Cetrulo Tournament, which solidified CBA's first-ever win at the 52-team tournament. The senior captain followed that performance up with a 13-3 record and an Epee Squad Title at the District Championship. His play at the Districts earned him another berth to the state individual tournament as well.
SOUNDBITE: "Tom has the most experience of anyone on the team. He has been a great mentor for the younger and new fencers, constantly encouraging and challenging them. As co-captain, Tom continues to lead his fellow teammates towards the best season in team's history." - coach Mary Mottola
ROB MAHALA | SENIOR | VARSITY BASKETBALL | JACKSON, N.J.
THE RUNDOWN: CBA Basketball was red-hot in the month of January with Mahala as a major catalyst. After dropping their first game of the new year, the Colts rattled off nine-straight wins to end the month. The senior forward touched every part of that winning streak, averaging 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. On January 26th, Mahala flirted with a triple-double, putting up nine points, nine assists and eight rebounds in a 37-point win over Freehold Township.
SOUNDBITE: "Robert is the ultimate CBA student-athlete, he's smart, tough, and skilled. No one plays harder or cares more about the team than him, constantly giving 110-percent every time on the court. He is very deserving of this award and has had an outstanding senior year for the team." - coach Geoff Billet
