With the calendar turning to November, Christian Brothers Academy Soccer has all eyes on the state tournament.
The Colts’ push for a fourth straight Shore Conference Championship ended on October 27 with a heartbreaking loss to a strong Colts Neck team. CBA conceded two goals before halftime, but came back to equalize it at 2-2 with goals by seniors Brandon Ortiz and Nick Tesauro. Colts Neck scored a late winner to earn their first Shore Conference title.
Now, CBA will look to bounce back with a strong showing in the Non-Public A State Tournament. In 2023, the Colts advanced all the way to the Non-Public A championship game, but fell just short to Seton Hall Prep.
The Colts are ranked as the number three team in the south sectional, earning a BYE in the first round. They will play the winner of Union Catholic and Notre Dame High School. That second round game will be played on Friday, November 8 at Keane Field.
“Why not us,” senior Phil Bodenski said. “All year we have been doubted, but we know that if we put our minds to it, we can beat any team.”
Resilience has been the key trait for the Colts this season. The team was 3-3 after six games, before running off nine wins in 10 games to end the regular season. CBA played exceptionally throughout the Shore Conference Tournament, shutting out all three opponents before the championship game.
“This year's senior class of soccer players is looking forward to their final run in the state tournament,” Mulligan said. “They are excited to return to the sectional and state final for the fourth consecutive year. The Non-Public A Tournament is always a highlight of each season.”
Mulligan’s team has proved that they can play with - and beat - any team and they are excited for their opportunity to make a run through the state tournament.
