CBA’s crew team saw success at a pair of regattas over the weekend, winning three key races.
On April 23, CBA’s Lightweight 4+ trounced the field in a 2,000 meter sprint, bringing home 1st place hardware at the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championships. They placed first in their flight and first overall in their category, with a time of 7:02.310, outpacing competitors like PNRA/Mercer and St. Joseph’s by at least 23 seconds, and overpowering all nine competitors.

The entire squad raced on April 24 in the Manny Flick 5 on the Schuykill River, rowing to two first place finishes and nabbing top five finishes in each race entered.
The JV4+ outrowed their competition to first place. They opened their time trial flight as the first boat to launch at the airhorn, an advantageous but tricky position in a head race. The boat of juniors and sophomores took off and never looked back, opening a jaw-dropping 19.6 second lead over its nearest competitor, and outdistancing the entire field of 21 boats. With their blazing speed of 4:48.96, the JV4+ also posted the best time of the day of all the 4+ boat races in the regatta, including varsity boats – nearly 71 competitors.
The Lightweight 4+ boat took first place in its flight, easily repeating its Saturday triumph and winning its second race of the weekend with a time of 4:54.140, for its third first place win of the season to date.
Strong finishes posted by the freshman and sophomore rowers bode well for the future growth of CBA’s crew team. In other results, CBA’s Freshman 8+ finished in third place in its flight; the JV4x finished second in its flight; the JV8+ took third in its flight and third overall in its category; the Varsity 2x boats finished second and fifth in their flight; and the Novice 4+ boat finished fourth of 16 boats in their time trial.
While no medals are awarded in the Flicks races, they are important qualifying races for the upcoming Philadelphia City Championship race, with premium race lane positions going to the top teams with the fastest times. After this weekend, the Colts look forward to the Garden State Championships on the Cooper River on April 30th.
