For the first time since 2007, the state of New Jersey has an undefeated ice hockey team.
Christian Brothers Academy won the 2022 NJSIAA Non-Public State Championship on March 7 to complete an astounding 27-0-3 season.
Behind a raucous Colt Crazies section at the Prudential Center, senior goaltender John Donohoe and CBA shut out Delbarton, 3-0, to earn the program's ninth state title.
With the cancelation of last year's tournament, Christian Brothers has won back-to-back state crowns, with the 2020 victory coming on the same ice two years earlier.
Donohoe, who was the 2020 NJ.com Player of the Year as a sophomore, saved all 22 shots that the Green Wave sent his way, adding to long list of big postseason performances. He earned shutouts in four of his last five games, including a 2-0 win in the Gordon Cup conference championship.
On the offensive end, it was junior Patrick Reilly who scored twice, once in the first period and again late in the third with an empty-netter. Ray Cartigiano and Aidan Guinnessey assisted on Reilly's first goal, while Donohoe was credited with the assist on the empty-netter.
Junior Will Thygeson scored with 11 and a half minutes left in the third period to give the Colts a 2-0 lead. Leighton Biesiadecki and Derek Fiore assisted on the crucial goal that gave CBA some breathing room.
Christian Brothers held a 34-22 shot advantage over Delbarton on the night.
The victory is CBA's fourth state championship since 2014, when the Colts also won back-to-back titles (2014, 2015).
CBA is the first team since the 2006-2007 St. Augustine squad to finish the season with zero losses on the resume.
