For the third straight season, Christian Brothers Academy Soccer will be playing in the state championship.
The Colts (20-2-1) used a 2-0 win over Bishop Eustace on Thursday night to secure the berth back to the NJSIAA Non-Public A State Championship. The championship will be played at Kean University on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
Christian Brothers used goals from junior Dominic Bellomo and senior Kevin Brennan to beat Bishop Eustace, which gave the Colts their third straight South Jersey Sectional title. The shutout was CBA's 16th of the season, which is a program record for shutouts (14 in 2016 & 2011).
Head coach Tom Mulligan is quick to contribute those 16 shutouts in 20 total wins to his defensive platoon of senior captain John Askin, senior goalie Shane Keenan, Jack Hempstead, Liam Mulvey and Brennan.
The Colts will face the winner of the North Jersey Sectional, state rival Delbarton. The Green Wave dispatched Seton Hall Prep, who CBA faced in last year's state final.
In 2016, Christian Brothers won a nail-biter over Seton Hall Prep, with Matt Thorsheim connecting on the game's lone goal with just seven minutes remaining in regulation. CBA lost 10 starters from that team, with just Askin returning to the starting rotation in 2017, making this year's run even more impressive.
The Colts and Delbarton have plenty of history in the state final game, as Delbarton edged CBA in 2015, while CBA downed the Green Wave in 2011.
CBA has won six state championships in 2016, 2011, 2002, 2000, 1998 and 1992.
Sunday's championship will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tickets will be available at the Kean University gate. For those who cannot attend the game, News 12 Varsity will be streaming the game online at news12varsity.com.
