Christian Brothers Academy Athletics is pleased to announce that Joe LaForgia '17 (Varsity Sailing) and Chris Misson '20 (Freshmen Soccer) are the September Student Athletes of the Month, sponsored by Tinton Falls Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy.

Joe LaForgia | Varsity Sailing | Senior | Island Heights, N.J.

The Rundown

LaForgia, the reigning New Jersey sailor of the year, returns for his senior year after helping lead Colts Sailing to back-to-back state championships in 2015 and 2016. He kicked off the fall season with a great performance at the annual Sailfest Cup, winning two races at the end of the day to solidify CBA's third-straight Sailfest title, which is tied for the longest streak in the history of the trophy. LaForgia then finished fourth in the Mid-Atlantic District Singlehanded Championship, narrowly missing a Nationals qualification after he suffered a boat breakdown. The senior team captain finished off a nice first month by helping the Colts qualify for the Mid-Atlantic District Fleet Championship for the 13th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the state.

Outside of sailing, LaForgia was just recognized as one of CBA's commended students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. This recognition comes from placing within the top five percent of students taking the qualifying test. He is also an AP Scholar, a member of the Math & Science Teams, plus he's an avid wind surfer and kite boarder in his free time.

Soundbite

"Joe is a perfect example of what CBA Sailing stands for. He is a tremendous sailor with a knack for reading the next move on the race course, helping to lead us to two state championships and numerous other titles. Meanwhile, he is someone who has excelled in his academics and is a role model for both CBA sailors and competitors around the state." - Coach Jason Lutz

Chris Misson | Freshmen Soccer | Freshman | Middletown, N.J.

The Rundown

Misson was voted one of three freshmen soccer captains this season. He has excelled at the center back position for the Colts thus far. CBA currently remains undefeated in freshmen play and they have not allowed a single goal all season. The defensive prowess of the Colts has been in large part thanks to Misson, who has developed as the vocal leader of the back line. His organization skills on the field help put his teammates in a position to succeed.

As a freshman at CBA, Misson has already become involved in the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Program.

Soundbite

"When the talent, character and work rate all come together at high levels, you have the making of not only a great player, but an even better person. Chris meets that description." - Coach AJ Mokes
